How to Plan and Plant Vegetable Gardens
We’re entering the best vegetable season of the year across Spring and Summer so now is the time to consider carefully the layout of your vegetable garden. Even if you have an extensive garden, take care to decide how you will utilize your space.
When you’ve decided that vegetables you would like to eat, consider the best layout for them all. Plant fast growing vegetables to shade those that don't need as much sun and plant double rows for those that mature a bit later. Planning a layout now will enable you to make the very best use of your space.
Investing time in researching the type of vegetables you're going to be growing is always worth the effort in the long run. Consider the best type of soil for your vegetables, the extent of sunlight that is best for them, how well watered they will need to be, and the best time to plant and grow them. Check on-line to make sure that your plans and planting arrangements are best suited for your location. Vegetables thrive best in different temperatures in order to reach their greatest potential, so make sure that you're planting at the right time of the season.
You can lay out vegetable gardens in a number of different ways. Some of these are interesting although most gardeners generally plant their vegetables in rows. This is an effective layout and accommodates weeding and watering.
An alternative garden layout is using beds. This can be a very successful way of planting a garden as it enables you to access the plants without stepping on your bedding. If you create trails through your bedding areas you can take care of your garden effectively. You can garden in raised beds, or in the ground style beds.
One of a number of alternative vegetable gardens is referred to by the French as a kitchen garden or a potager. This involves laying out geometric shapes in your garden. You might chose to lay your garden in circles and hexagons, and you can even arrange your plants by food type, or color. You can for example, grow you salad food in one area and plant your berries and fruits in another.
Visualize whatever layouts you are considering and imagine how they will translate into workable vegetable gardens and decide upon the most appealing. Then fill your garden with an array of delightful vegetables that you will be able to tend easily and enjoy in salads or warm dishes.
