5 Important Tips for Your Organic Vegetable Garden
Growing your own vegetables means that this food is tasty, chemical free and fresh. You get to eat it in its best condition as it is grown close to and has no need to be transported over extended distances and time.
In addition the produce of your organic vegetable garden is grown in a way that cultivates the land in a natural way avoiding the impact of pesticides and other chemicals on the soil. In this way the quality of the soil and its crops is maintained over many years. This has to be better for growers and consumers of vegetables.
Tip 1
To grow a fully organic vegetable garden is quite a challenge however if you persist and are prepared to develop new skills over time you can learn to be more ‘organic’. All organic gardeners aim to keep making better decisions about the way they plan, sow, fertilize and protect their home-grown vegetables.
Tip 2
Interplant herbs and flowers with strong scents like oregano and marigolds to attract beneficial insects and diminish pests likely to eat the vegetables you plant. Known as ‘companion planting’, this is an effective ‘non chemical’ way of confusing large numbers of pests in your vegetable garden.
Tip 3
Crop Rotation is a common practice in an organic vegetable garden. This involves the grouping, growing and rotating of selected plants from one year to the next. The benefits of this include the reduction of soil pests and diseases, the prevention of soil nutrient depletion, higher yielding crops and a healthier soil over the long term.
Tip 4
Use compost and composting manures to increase and maintain soil fertility. These organic materials feed earthworms, helpful bacteria and micro-organisms in the soil. These organisms break soil down into compounds and nutrients as they decay and these can be absorbed into the plants roots. Organic matter also allows the soil to retain water and pockets of oxygen all important for the growth of healthy vegetables.
Tip 5
Add liquid organic fertilizer during the growing season for even healthier vegetables. Liquid fertilizers contain nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous that plants need small amounts of and that most importantly for organic gardeners benefit the health of their organic vegetable garden soil.
