Summer Vegetables Plants for a Salad - Carrots, Cucumbers and Lettuces
The benefit of preparing well for each of these vegetables plants is the experience of sweet, crisp salads all summer long so read on….
Carrots come in two varieties -those with long roots, and those with short roots.
If you plant the long-rooted carrot, the soil must be worked down to a depth of eighteen inches. The shorter ones will do well in eight inches of well-worked sandy soil.
Do not put carrot seed into freshly manured land. Carrots need to be thinned. As the little seedlings come up you will find that they are much too close together. Wait a little then thin a little, so that the carrots will thrive. The young, tiny carrots can be used in early summer salads.
Cucumbers are native vegetables plants of India. They need a light, sandy and rich soil. This soil needs to be rich in organic matter. When cucumbers are grown outdoors, they are planted in hills. They are also grown in hothouses where they can they hang from the roof. In the greenhouse a hive of bees can be kept so that cross-fertilization occurs.
Tips for raising cucumbers include:
• Sow the seed inside, cover with one inch of rich soil
• Plant six seeds in a little space of six inches diameter.
• Place like a bean seed with the germinating end in the soil.
• When the risk of frost is over, each set of six little plants, soil and all, should be planted in the open.
• Later, after the danger of insect pests is over, thin out to three plants in a ‘hill’. The hills should be about four feet apart on all sides.
Lettuces are ancient vegetables plants. Lettuce was grown and served before biblical times. There is a wild lettuce from which the cultivated probably came. Lettuce may be tucked into the garden almost anywhere. It is one of the most decorative of vegetables with its compact head, the green of the leaves and its symmetrical appearance.
Towards the end of summer, the early sowings of lettuce get old and starts to go to seed. Pull them up. To enjoy tender lettuce in mid and late summer, plant lettuce seeds frequently. If seed is planted every ten days or two weeks all summer, you can have tender lettuce all the season. Always avoid old lettuce that becomes bitter and tough.
